My Mom has Cancer—The Diagnosis We Never Expected

The diagnosis was a complete shock.

During a phone call to my mom a month ago I jokingly told her that she needed to live to be 900. Just the thought of not having her near, an ever present influence, was almost too much to fathom.

5 weeks ago. Tuesday morning. 3 days before my 34th birthday.

She answered my call to her cell phone.

Until that moment my day was one of errands and laughter as I rode shotgun, keeping my significant other company. My mom’s voice, weariness coupled with strength I can only hope for, expressed words that took my mind hours to completely comprehend.

Emily, it was positive.
I have breast cancer.

I heard those words just over a month ago.

A month ago, and a century.

  1. Emily,
I’m going through this right now with an Aunt and my MIL both who are very close to me.

If there’s anything you need, find me. Honestly, I’ve been through the best and the worst of it.

Sending positive thoughts to your Mom… And you.

  11. Emily,

Sorry I’ve been out of touch. I am so sorry to hear this. I’m praying for a good prognosis. I faced this as well as several friends. It can be beat!
If you will e-mail me your Mom’s name, I’d like to put her in a prayer chain.

  13. Yeah that’s tough, and I’m so sorry to hear it. But don’t be negative, gal. You know better than most how new stuff is happening in this area every day, and this diagnosis is not nearly so serious as it was even a couple years ago.
Tell Mom we are ALL praying for her, or sending her good vibes!

  15. Please make sure your mother have an excellent oncologist, who is both competent and compassionate. My thoughts are with you and your family. Hope your mother’s cancer will achieve “cured” status.

  17. Emily,

As I told you a month ago, if there is anything you need, anything at all, I’m just a phone call away. I can’t relate to this situation, but I’m sure it must be terrifying.

I’m sorry to hear about the bad news. You, your mom, and your entire family are in my prayers. Sending warm wishes your way…
