I am so very excited to be part of “EstroFest” on BlogTalkRadio, hosted by Doctor Anonymous on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14 at 9 p.m. EST!

For those of you who haven’t participated yet, Doctor Anonymous, a self-proclaimed blogaholic, is the host of his own Internet broadcasted talk show. Last night’s edition was amazing with the famous blogger/surgeon Dr. Sid Schwab and the largest audience to date. This is becoming quite the place to be for medical/nursing bloggers and we are hoping that next week’s show will break more records.

The EstoFest panel consists of a patient, a medic, a nurse (me!) and a doctor. We have the entire range covered.

EstroFest Panel—–

Doctor Anonymous—Host @ Doctor Anonymous
Jenni—Patient @ Chronicbabe
Emily—Medic, aka Emergency Emm @ Backboards and Bandaids
Me—Nurse, aka Crzegrl and @ NursingBytes
Val—Physician, aka Dr. Val @ Dr. Val and The Voice of Reason

What do we all have in common? Loud yelling in the chat room that Dr. A needed more Estrogen on his show! Thus, EstroFest was born.

Although I will be putting more reminders up, here is the link for the show. I would suggest logging in and signing up for a blogtalkradio account before the show begins so you can be a known user in the chat room where the action really takes place!

Can’t wait to have you all there. Oh, and Dr. Val? Thanks for the plug ;) —I’m always willing to bring on the shock value.

Blogging ADOBSO

Ron, one of the nurses I work with, looked at me one day during shift change and said, “Emily, have your ever heard of ADOBSO?”

We were both military and medical to boot, so acronyms are just a part of our daily lives, and the source of much humor.

I stood there, thinking trying to work it out. I gave up when the corner of Ron’s mouth twitched, begging to break into a grin.

“I give up.”

He looked at me “Well, it stands for: Attention Defic—-OOOOhhhhh Bright Shiny Object!” as his attention swung to the shiniest thing in the room.

I’ve gotten much mileage out of it since.

And that, dear reader is how my blogging has been lately, here there an everywhere, just not in a final posting form! So, I apologize for the plethora of short announcement type posts that I am putting up today.

Just wanted to pass on this tidbit for all you nurses who have wanted the opportunity to write for the paper world! PLEASE PASS THIS ON!

Kaplan Publishing has put out a call for submissions for a series of nursing anthologies. From the email I received:

Kaplan Publishing is launching an exciting new series of nonfiction books
that share the stories behind the relationships, experiences, and issues
nurses encounter on the job‹whether they work in a hospital, clinic, home
setting, hospice, private medical practice, or elsewhere.

These slice-of-life stories are written by nurses from all walks of life and
provide unique personal insights into powerful universal truths.
Entertaining and educational, inspirational and practical, each book will
feature 2025 true stories about the experiences and relationships that
inspire and enrich the lives of nurses and all those who come into contact
with them.

The entries are to be between 1000-2500 words in length but here is the important part: THE DEADLINES ARE SOON!

15 FEB: “Reflections on Doctors”
1 MAR: “Final Moments: Death and Dying”
1 MAY: “Meditations on Hope”

Please go here for more information on how to submit!

Again, please pass this information on as I would like to make sure that as many of us who are passionate about what we do have an opportunity to be published.

Crazy questions for soldiers

Last summer for Army Annual Training, we spent two weeks honing the skills of some absolutely amazing Combat Medics.

Each morning we posted, “The question of the Day.” During lulls in training, we would call on individuals for the answers. At first, the soldiers were a bit hesitant to answer, but by the end of the two weeks, the answers became a source of creative pride and down right entertaining. This post from Someonetc at Orthopaedic Residency: The attending perspective threw me back to last summer.

Some examples:

“If you were a cartoon character, who would you be?” (answers from Betty Boop to Johnny Bravo)
“If they made the 322nd Medical Company, the Movie, which actor/actress would play your part?” (answers from Angelina Jolie to Seth Green)

My favorite?

“When you enter a stadium, what theme song do they play?”

For 1LT Berens, that last question was easy. So, LT Berens and LT Lee, this one is for you:

If you haven’t gotten the idea from my tattoos, I am fascinated with the ocean, and underwater life. There is just something peaceful and serene about being under the surface.

Someday, I will have custom saltwater aquariums installed in my home (aka the HTL). Until then, I so want link. It would fit the theme of the HTL like a shark tank in an evil villain’s fortress!

I think ‘Alpha the Betta,’ (my bright red Betta Fish) would be much happier here.
