Becoming a Flight Nurse

This week I took an obvious hiatus from my blogs as it felt like my brain couldn’t handle any more creative thinking. I officially hit mental overload, which I didn’t know was remotely possible. While attempting to break myself back in, I decided to do a bit of layout editing and rearranged not only my side bar, but fixed layout issues from my CV page and the page titled “Becoming a Flight Nurse.”

As I don’t believe I mentioned it in a formal post, I wanted to correct that and give props to the nursing student who sent it to me. The paper is posted as a permanent page here with his gracious permission. Oh, and here it to hoping he will start that blog!!!

This is a paper written by John C. Lee, Jr., SRN from the east side of the country. I am grateful that he shared it with me, because he captured the desire to become a flight nurse and quite a lot of useful information for those interested in the field. Reprinted with permission.

MLK Jr. Remembered

Last August, B.J. and I made the trip via train to pick up my car from our friend Paul in Northern Mississippi. As our adventures go, we got into the station in Memphis a bit early and had time to kill before we were picked up. After a good Southern breakfast we were out the door and walking in the thick humidity. Not having a clue where we were, we just kinda headed up one street and down the next looking at the buildings, drenched in sweat.

It was a sureal moment as I turned, without knowing, and directly faced the balcony where MLK was shot dead by a sniper. In that split second, I could almost see the men standing over his body, pointing in the direction of the gun fire. A death that occurred over 7 years before I was born, was represented in my mind through photographs.

We wandered closer and took a series of photos, me all excited and somewhat impressed with my instant recognition. Although the museum was closed, we struck up a conversation with a couple of fellow travelers who took the photo of us by the plaque outside what was the Lorraine Motel.

From the official site:

The aftershock of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on April 4, 1968 would plunge the Lorraine Motel, a small minority-owned business in the south-end of downtown Memphis, into a long and steep decline. The motel’s owner, Walter Lane Bailey kept a couple of rooms as a shrine to Dr. King and to Bailey’s wife, Lorraine, who died of a brain hemorrhage several hours after King was shot.

By 1982, the Lorraine Motel was a foreclosed property. A group of prominent Memphians, concerned that this historic site would be destroyed through continued neglect and indifference, formed the Martin Luther King Memorial Foundation to save the Lorraine. Using a design report by a former Smithsonian Institution, Benjamin Lawless, the Foundation started seeking funding for the nations’s first comprehensive exhibit chronicling America’s civil rights movement.

Yet another page to be written in the volumes of my crazy life. MLK Day is a bit more real to me this year.

So I was cracking up when EmergencyEm posted about this sexy nurse outfit that appeared when she did a google search on “Emergency Emily.” As of course, I share the name Emily and tend to rant about the ridiculousness of caring if nurses are sexualized in such a way, I thought I would mention it here as well.

I realized the other day that I needed to just walk away from my keyboard and let my New Year’s plethora of blogging settle for a few days.  I was becoming a bit obsessive.  Although I had intentions of leaving you some stuff here yesterday, I took to responding to some incredible emails from a bunch of cool readers instead.

Thank you all for the complements, encouragement, sharing who you are with me and what your professional goals are!  I love the questions and am realizing how little information exists on the flight nurse career path.  I smell opportunity!

To get the ball rolling, I set up a Flight and Surface Transport Nursing group on Nursinglink.com.  If you are not already a member there, please create a free account and join the group.  I would love to get a good running discussion going there!

In the mean time, keep the emails and questions coming!

Information Overload

The past two days have been ones thick with Internet based information/meetings and such. Unfortunately, although I have been engrossed in projects, my blogging is a bit behind.

For those of you dear readers who have sent me email recently, I apologize from my toes, but responding is very high on the priority list!

As I am still breaking in NursingBytes and have some housekeeping here that I want to do, I am hoping that balance will soon be struck.

In the mean time, I saw a cool post (of course I can’t find where) documenting photographs of the work spaces of different game tech designers, execs. Thought I would go with that and give you guys a look at my little corner of the world.

Oh the gadgets galore!

Yes, those are x-ray print outs on my wall. I will tell stories about them later. And yes, for the observant, that IS a Sony UX60 Clie’ on the far right. I just can’t seem to get rid of the damn thing.

More stories to come. I just have to walk away from this screen for a bit.

Seriously—What (tattooed) Disney Princess Are You?

I have to admit something. I am kinda drawn to those online quiz things. Gawd it is almost like a teenage girl admitting she is knocked up!

So, anyways, my friend April sent me a linky-lu on Facebook for the quiz, “What Disney Princess Are You, and funny enough, the description actually pegged me:

Ariel
I’m Ariel

You are the adventurous princess. Although set into a life of luxury and wealth, you crave the unknown. Learning new things is an integral part of your nature. You have the extraordinary ability of meeting new people without having any preconceived biases. You know what you want and you are willing to take the risk to get it. You’re Ariel!

Okay, minus the luxury and wealth part.

Even my tattoos give it away.
