Video Snapshot 2

As I sit here browsing my RSS feeds, drinking one of my favorite wines, I wanted to take a few minutes to mention a few important, and not so important things.

First things first!

Grand Rounds 4.10 are on over at Prudence, M.D. Another great job!

Main Med-2

Second!

I finally decided on a vanity plate for Sylvia my Saab 9-3 Convertible aka
<< the car >> (spoken in whispered tones). Any guesses? [no blabbing Benny!]

Myplate-1

Third!

And most importantly for “Concerns” on the Briefing Form for tomorrow day shift:

Lunch will be served around noon and will be Lasagna a la Emily Rocks.

Lastly!

I am savoring a wonderful 2006, Unoaked Chardonnay introduced to me by Mississippi Pauli. A screw cap at somewhere between $11-$14 a bottle. A great way to end the evening!

Thought I was finished blogging for the time being, but just came across this via blackfive.net.

SGT Jill Stevens, aka G.I. Jill, is now inducted into the “Chicks that Kick Ass” category of crzegrl.net.

Armymil-2007-11-20-100022

SGT Stevens is not only a Nurse (whooohhhoooo), a Veteran who served in Afghanistan as a combat Medic, but is also Miss Utah 2007 and now a competitor for the Miss USA crown in 2008. Read her bio and blog here.

Yes boys, GORGEOUS girls wear combat boots too. Guess I am now a fan of the Miss USA pageant. HOOAH!

Another link borrowed from blackfive.net, via the website Army.mil/news about Jill here. Here is more information via the blog America’s North Shore Journal which includes photos of SGT Stevens in theater.

Good Luck SGT Stevens! Kick some prissy ass!

What does an adrenaline, nerd girl do with a few days off? Yes that is right folks, surf the Internet. For hours. And hours. I will blame my physical sloth on feeling yucky. Be that as it may, here are some interesting additions to my site, places I have spent too much time, and diamond finds.

First I bring you a few new additions to my blogroll:

Doctor Anonymous under the Medical heading. Yet another blog I can’t believe I haven’t added earlier. I am VERY interested in the edgy nerd stuff he is integrating into the medical blog-o-sphere.

The T-Dude: A Growing Discontent Since 1965 under the General heading. Interesting bits about what is going on in the world.

Next is a link I have mentioned before:

NursingLinkup.com The Nation’s Nursing Community

This is a site I have spent quite some time the past few days. Apparently, I am flagged as one of the founding members but shamefully hadn’t visited for MONTHS. Hopefully I have resolved some of that with quite a lot of writing/photos/videos. It is a great idea and great community.

If you are a member please add me! (username: crzegrl)

A True Gem and all around great read from Ian at ImpactEDNurse.com titled “how to be a nurse”:

E-Book

Download the .pdf for free here. Not only did I print it out and devour it all in one sitting, I passed it on to another nurse I know. Wow.

I also have made some housekeeping changes to the site.

-My rss feeds for both posts and comments are now directed through FeedBurner
-I added a link and ranking graphic to healthcare100.com
-I added a Technorati ranking graphic and fave button
-I added a button to add my blog to Bloglines
-Now have my status to the TTLB ecosystem

I guess I have accomplished and read quite a lot the last few days. Geesh!

Personal blogging evolution

For the first four years of my blog, I used it more as a journal of sorts. It was a place to go when I needed to write. Only my close friends knew about it and I maintained a sense of semi-anonymity.

This summer brought about quite a lot of change in my personal life. It was almost as though I was able to push up through the dirt, unfurl my leaves and bloom. Part of that metamorphosis was the decision to no longer blog half hidden.

With that being decided, I told my chief flight nurse about my blog and the plans I have for it. I slowly began telling my colleagues who have offered great support (yes Maria you ARE my favorite communicator!).

I actually had one of my Docs call and ask for my blog address so he could show a friend (hey Steve!). This excites me to no end. As so many people who have been ‘outted’ or even fired for their blogs, I couldn’t be more grateful. They have gone so far as to give me ideas and even video (thanks Ron!). Just as important to me is that they are reading it. They are helping me make sure I am not overstepping boundaries (thanks Tony!) and keeping it as I intend: a positive but realistic look at flight medicine and medical aviation.

With this, I decided to post my CV online in its entirety. Okay, minus my phone and address. I am also adding a page that has more information about me and why I do what I do.

Hopefully by seeing a real person, being a real nurse, my life will touch, inspire, give hope and convince at least one nurse or potential nurse that this profession is not one of being a handmaiden. It isn’t all about bedpans, following orders, or the realm of the woman. To be a successful nurse you must be open minded, intelligent, have a passion for people, a thirst for knowledge, and above all want to help and protect those who need it the most: our patients.

That is why I blog.

That is why my life is online and my heart is always on my sleeve.

Here is video I took with my old camera last winter of us lifting off of the roof of yet another hospital. Not great, but gives a good view of what we see! I can’t believe I forgot about taking it.

Choosing a Vanity Plate

I have spent way too much time contemplating a vanity plate for Sylvia <<the car>>. My first choice, “INKED,” and my second “ADRNLN” were both taken. So, I mentioned stealing a friend’s idea

Myplate-3

but was told that would earn me a beating. Next I considered

Myplate-1

but don’t want to give the wrong impression. One shouldn’t create an image of a girl with a pocket protector and tape on her glasses.

So I tossed around the idea of referring to my blog habits with

Myplate-2

since “blogger” was already taken. But that was a bit, well, boring.

My last idea

Myplate

is in reference to the tattoo on my neck. It represents my love of the ocean, and my fascination with being in the air. Maybe that sounds a bit to close to swimmies.

Maybe I should just go with

Myplate-4

because enough is enough!

Flight Nurse in Action: Header Explained

Well, as I can’t bring myself to write about anything deep tonight, I thought it would be a good time to explain my header.

This was taken towards the end of the summer by Ben during a scene call up north.

From left to right: Brad S., pilot, myself, FRN, and Hartley T., MD

I love this photo for so many reasons. Most importantly is that it captured us in our groove. By this I mean that on any given scene during the patient loading sequence this is where you will find the pilot, the nurse and the doctor. It is like a dance in which each person knows the steps.

The colors in the photo are also amazing. The burgundy of the blanket covering the patient, the blue of the spread on our stretcher, the contrast of the ProPaq monitor on the stretcher pole.

Although you can’t see my face, three things which mean the most to me are at the forefront of the photo: the US flag on my uniform, the water wing tattoo below my hair line, and the patch of my MEDEVAC unit when I was a flight nurse. All deep pieces of me.

There are many things I could talk extensively about, but instead, I will simply give you a link to the rest of the set here.

breaking in the new coffee mug

Well the evil that is the cold and flu season has finally scored one for the runny nose team. My T-cells have fought the good fight, but their defenses have been breached. So, as I contemplate making tomato soup and grilled cheese, I am video chatting with Kev from ventl8.com.

———–

Update: Okay, so I spent 2.5 movies worth of time attempting to migrate ventl8.com from Apple’s blogging platform over to WordPress on my server.

What a pain in the ass.

I am an Apple/Mac geek though and through, but even I have my limits. Although I’m still working on his site, it is at least functional. Go check him out.

Today’s View—Sunrise in the West

Angel Nurse
Me on the Roof at Sunrise

It was freezing this morning when we were sent out to pick up a trauma patient for an inter-facility transfer. On our way back to our hospital I tried, with no luck, to get a good photo of the sunrise through my window. It wasn’t quite light enough yet.

On our way back to the roof, I pulled out my camera for a scenery photo. My pilot, however, had me stand at the other end of the pad for this photo. I’m not used to being on this end of the camera.

The sun over my right shoulder is actually the sunrise reflected off of one of the downtown buildings.

Watching the sunrise from the west was amazing.
