Army Friends, new and old

I am still considering leaving the Army when my obligation is complete. More often than not, it feels as though the time and energy required to maintain my motivation for being a good soldier and a competent officer would be more beneficial if focused elsewhere.

After expressing this line of reasoning to my good friend Kevin, he said, “But Emily, where would you find friends as important as those you have from the Army? You don’t meet those kinds of people just anywhere.”

He is right. I would go to the ends of the earth for those Army friends. You don’t meet people like that every day.

topics, ideas, brainstorms—where does the blog inspiration come from?

Writing doesn’t just happen.

This may seem like a simple statement, but it has taken quite some time for me to realize it. Writing is progressing into an all consuming process integrating itself into the way I think. Ideas materialize at different times, many when I am missing a pen, or have a syringe in my hand instead. Unfortunately, there is no taking a quick break during a flight in order to trap a thought. Sadly it has led to many a lost post.

I now go everywhere with my laptop, and two moleskine note books. The small one is on my person at almost all times. The larger is around for those times using my computer isn’t possible or I am simply in the mood for putting pen to paper.

Leave it to Flight Nurse Emily to take notes while driving down the road, or while on the treadmill. And yes, I have done both. Now let’s see if it is reflected in the number and quality of my posts!

So tell me, what is your writing process like?

Geek Girl Day

Oh my has today been productive on the WordPress, geek side of the house. I spent today dabbling with my layout, joining MyBlogLog, and just enjoying the nerdy-ness of it all.

I would like to give an official shout out to Shane for his help by default (cruised the heck out of both of his sites!) in customizing my site. And to think I considered forking over a TON of cash to a designer.

On the Nurse Blog tip, I did add a new link on my blogroll to “Its a Nurse Thing” who just got accepted to the University of Michigan for an RN to MSN bridge program. Go give her a read!

Okay, so I know I need to commit to writing more. You cant get better at something unless you practice. As is the way of the world, I came across an entry via Kim at Emergiblog challenging bloggers to 90 days of consistent writing.

Thanks for the challenge Shane. I think it was just what I needed.

Cold day in Hell

Well, it isn’t quite hell, but I can no longer argue with a dear friend from the south who curses the “horrible cold” that is the north.

This morning at 8:30 there was NO snow on the ground. Five hours later? Between 3 and 4 inches. How can this possibly be the 11th of April?

This photo was taken a few minutes ago through my kitchen window:

With the surprise snow, the critters are taking advantage of my bird feeders. When I was little, I would watch my mom run out in the snow to fill the bird feeders in shorts a t-shirt and boots. I cracked up when I realized I was filling them in my flip-flops the other day (before the snow silly!).

Over the past few weeks, one of the feeders was being tipped open by a mysterious invader. Last night, the mystery of the dumped out bird feeder was solved. Although I caught a squirrel perched on the top today, I was alerted to the sneak by the mighty hunting dogs Lucy and Steve. Standing under the bird feeder at dusk was a White Tail deer, with an accomplice just a few yards away. Hmmmm.

French Maid replaces Naughty Nurse

There is just something to be said for being ultra productive during my last day off prior to a long string of shifts. I tend to ‘let it all go’ during my days at work but many times, don’t have the gumption to catch up on my few days off. Patrick loves to tell people that the amount of mess existing in the house is directly proportional to the number of days I have worked in a row.

Not only are my taxes done (okay, all I really had to do is review what the preparer did!), but my car registration is mailed in a month early, my check book is balanced, my pile of papers has been sorted and filed/shreded, the laundry is done, floors vacuumed, dogs bathed, work clothes laid out, lunch packed, dishes done——and a blog post written.

Okay, so this post has nothing to do with dressing up in a French Maid outfit, but there are a few of you who were REALLY excited by that title! Ummmmhmmmm. You know who you are . . .

In my nerdy wanderings over the internet, I found yet another way to broadcast my web presence in the form of the ShowYourself widget. Oh, and I actually have two YouTube videos uploaded! No, they aren’t anything earth shaking, just a video of my ‘too cute for her own good’ niece, and a short snap from Arlington. Mostly those are up as practice uploads.

So, let me know if you find any issues! More video, links and photos in the future!

Nursing—the Amazing Profession

The last flights back home from areas far and wide have crossed my path with nurses. We are every where doing incredibly interesting things. The first nurse worked with OB prevention/outreach programs which are funded by the state. The nurse I am currently sitting near works in a Health Department STD clinic. She has worked in Step-Down, MICU, and Post-Partum, to name just a few areas.

What other profession contains such diversity? I find it throughly amazing that a common background leads to so many different interests. Get bored taking care of adult trauma patients? Get a job in a NICU. Get bored there? Move to home care. Don’t like the hours at one? Move to another.

Oh, and you will rarely, if ever, meet an unintelligent nurse. We will be all shapes, sizes, ages and backgrounds, but as a whole, you have to be smarter than the average population.

God how I love this profession.

Nightmare

He shot me in the head.

I saw a flash of light but did not die.

You cannot die in a dream.

Last night was the first time in my life I had a gory dream. No, it wasn’t my first subconscious foray into nightmares, or even the first in which I should have died but woke up in the nick of time. It was the first in which I was to die a violent death. The first that I woke up remembering what I looked like with the side of my head pulverized.

In the daylight my dream, in some ways, seems comical. In other ways it frightens me even more. As the second person lined their weapon up to my head I remember trying to go to a happy place so I wouldn’t know what they were doing. I didn’t want to feel them move, or hear the mechanism of the gun chambering a round.

In my mind I focused on hearing a friend’s voice calling a nickname given to me by my mother.

Emilina Carolina.

The gun did not go off.

There is more to the dream, like my begging for another angle to preserve my eyesight if I lived through another bullet to my brain. “I wouldn’t be able to handle not seeing,” I calmly explained.

The ending to this post is as in my dream. Abrupt.
