Paying my Respects

When I think about Washington DC, I don’t automatically associate it with the White House, the Washington Monument, or the Smithsonian. Instead, I think about the Vietnam Memorial, the Women’s Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.

I inevitably reflect on those who have sacrificed their lives for my country and the pride I feel walking in such noble, hallowed places. I told Patrick I feel as though it is necessary to pay my respects in some way each time I visit DC. Making the trip to walk along the names of the Wall and step through the grave stones of Arlington, especially of those long passed, is almost a pilgrimage for me. It makes me feel intensely, then gifts me with a sense of peace.

While at Arlington on this trip, I stood beside the Eternal Flame amongst an uncharacteristically subdued mob of spring break teenagers. As I took a few steps back turning to admire the view of the Mall I heard a girl of 7 or 8 years ask her father, “why is everybody whispering?”

He quietly said, “I will explain it in a little while.”

I smiled, hoping to be able to hear the same question from my nieces and nephews. It is up to us to make sure the next generation never forgets.
I truly hope he did indeed take the time to explain it.

Army-News Pressreleases

With the mess at Walter Reed and the unsurprising resignation of Lieutenant General Kevin Kiley, the Army’s new (interim) top medical officer is Major General Gale Pollock, Nurse Corps.

Here is the educational portion of her bio from the AMEDD website:

Pollock

Maj. Gen. Gale S. Pollock became the U.S. Army Deputy Surgeon General in October 2006. Pollock received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Maryland. She attended the U.S. Army Nurse Anesthesia Program and is a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). She received her Master of Business Administration from Boston University; a Master’s in Healthcare Administration from Baylor University, a Master’s in National Security and Strategy from the National Defense University, and an honorary Doctorate of Public Service from the University of Maryland. She is also a Fellow in The American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE).

Her military bio is just as impressive.

Although this is a temporary position, it is the first time a Nurse Corps officer has held the office of Army Surgeon General. I am excited to see what she does with the leadership opportunity that has been presented to her.

Nursing is as much about patient advocacy as it is about caring for someone’s physical needs. The soldiers who have sacrificed so much for our country have needed someone to shake things up and say ‘enough is enough.’ MG Pollock has the chance to do what we do best: protect our patients.

Lead from the front MG Pollock. . .Lead from the front.

Life in the world of EMS is sometimes wrought with long hours of sitting. Sitting and waiting.

Other times, it is heart-stoppingly (quite literally!) exciting.

Once in awhile, it is also amazingly beautiful.

Pain Memory

Oh how time allows us to forget the pain related to our experiences and therefore recall only the good memories. It tricks us into repeating that which has made us suffer.

Tattoos—we know they hurt, but the desire for more ink allows us to forget.
Childbirth—the desire to have another child mutes the misery that often accompanies pregnancy.
New blog software—the need to have the latest and greatest release excites us into starting down the slippery slope of installing, reinstalling…learning and relearning programs, code, files and ftp.

I now remember the agony related to reaching beyond my comfortable nerdy-ness. The WordPress installation is complete. The blog has been successfully imported, but the design process…well…that is another story.

I may need some anticoagulant therapy before this is over.
