Okay guys…sorry, sorry, sorry. Your comments are there, I just have been lax in my MovableType work lately.

Paramedic School is done, and my test is in two weeks.

I have been busting my ass to get my ride alongs and paperwork done before going to Memphis to take my exams. My god have I missed working ambulance!

Along with medic school, I am unburying myself from my Army obligations, taking other classes for work, and flying.

To top it off? Patrick just got a new job. We are both thrilled, but he starts in 3 weeks. So, Memphis in 2 weeks, DC in 3 weeks and he will be gone until next July.

My life is never normal.

Sounds like a book doesn’t it?

After being away for Paramedic School, I returned home to the pile of mail I was dreading. Fortunately, in it was the information on the AAOS conference in February. Interesting to see my name in the program as a speaker. Guess I grew up at some point and didn’t realize it.

By the way…anyone know anything about pelvic fractures????? j/k

Omaha House Fire

The RN to Paramedic course I am at right now is amazing. Okay, the school house stuff has been amazing, but up until last night the “ride-along” portion left a bit to be desired. We have a 50 team lead requirement and out of 17.5 hours I have been on one medical call. The firefighters have been more than accommodating, but all has been slow…until 10 pm last night:

Fire2

This was a house fire which manifested in the attic. THE ONE TIME I DIDN’T HAVE MY CAMERA! So, the photos were taken on my phone.

The attic had been blocked off, so the firefighters had to access it through the windows from the roof. It was incredible to see those guys scurry up the ladder with 75 pounds of gear on.

Fire4

The local news stations and newspaper reporters were there as well.

It was interesting to be more of a bystander as I am usually the one in the middle of the chaos.

I wish you could see the Battalion chief better in this photo (below). He wears a white helmet perpetually cocked to the left side. I saw him do 2 TV interviews and one with a newspaper reporter.

They pulled me right up to the action and gave me the play-by-play. I even had a conversation (not an interview) with a reporter from channel 6. I snuck my opinion in regarding the recent hoo-ha which has the city looking at decreasing the number of firefighters on each truck from 4 to 3 and outsourcing the ambulance services. Local politics are the same everywhere.

All politics aside, I was amazed at the speed of response, not only from the EMS services, but the Red Cross, Humane Society, and Salvation Army. Apparently the Salvation Army has a vehicle they roll in with which carries all sorts of sustainment (gatorade, water, hot dogs, etc.) for the firefighters and anyone else involved. The FFs have affectionately dubbed it “Wiener One.”

I survived my first day of Paramedic School. Man is this going to be a rough two weeks. Fortunately, my internship shift with Squad 52 was a good one. Although we didn’t have any calls, I was reminded that firefighters are the same everywhere.

God how I have missed working in EMS.

Small Town Love

I just love a small town airport. No wait in line to check in, free wifi internet access and zipped right through security. Unfortunately, I still get here way too early, so here I sit at the gate composing yet another post.

On the docket for the next two weeks is Paramedic school. Although I am not overly prepared, I am finally beginning to look forward to it. This is the last in a long line of professional goals that I set out to accomplish a very long time ago.

Although my major goals have been more or less ticked off, I don’t believe I will replace them at this point. As Patrick said this morning, I should just sit back and enjoy my job for once.

Now, all I have to do is pass the Paramedic exams! Anyone out there taken the national registry lately?
