Stupid medical student denigrating nurses

Okay, although I just put up the piece regarding nurses being overly sensitive about being portrayed as sex objects, I agree with the post at the Nurse Practitioner’s Place. I cannot believe that these medical students even thought this would be appropriate.

Stupid medical student denigrating nurses:

July 8, 2005 — The Edmonton Journal published a fair piece by Jodie Sinnema on May 19 about the recent controversy surrounding the lyrics of a ‘Nurses’ Song’ performed by University of Alberta medical students at their annual ‘Medshow.’ It seems that nursing professors, the university provost, and even the medical school dean found something objectionable about the song’s assertions that nurses were ‘whores’ and ‘bitches’ whose ‘incompetence’ threatened to ‘make our patients die.’ But at least the medical students felt nurses were qualified to ‘fill up my coffeepot’ and ‘give good head,’ and the refrain urged nurses to ‘show me those boobs.’ The song seems to reflect virulent misogyny, ignorance of nursing, and professional insecurity, a perfect storm of dysfunction that persists in many clinical settings, harming patients and contributing to nursing burnout and the global nursing shortage. The past 3 weeks have been busy. Two of my sisters got married, my mom turned 50 (and had the surprise party to go with it) and my nephew turned 2. Needless to say, I am ready for a break from parties and receptions.

The cool thing about finally living at home is that I no longer have to miss these events. The hard part is remembering them all.

We had Joey’s birthday party at the country club tonight (not as snobby as it sounds…my mom is general manager and to see her during golf season we have EVERYTHING at the cc). And yes, the 2 year old got his own golf clubs to include bag/water bottle/club cover. I actually think he has done more golfing on the course than I have, and I live on the 5th hole.

The photos? Yeah, those are to PROVE that I have actually golfed there. Just ignore the flip-flops.

Good enough Professor Gideon?

Tropical Storm Emily

Oh to have a tropical storm named for me!

New storm forms

Forecasters at the hurricane center were monitoring another tropical system that appeared headed for the Caribbean Sea, said Max Mayfield, director of the National Hurricane Center.

Tropical depression 5 formed off western Africa and could drift into the Caribbean within four days, Mayfield said.

If it develops into a tropical storm, its name would be Emily — the fifth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season.

Walk in the Woods.gif

Okay, I really didn’t mean to go today and buy hiking boots, but I found a pair that fit me PERFECTLY!

My friend Paul recommended the book “A Walk in the Woods” by Bill Bryson, which was my main purpose for heading towards the shopping center. It just so happened that the EMS store was right next to it.

I consider it fate.

So, not only did I get the above book which is about walking the Appalachian Trail, but I also got boots which BETTER walk the AT.

*pointed look at PC*

There is no going back now my friend. There is no going back.

AT, here we come!

(btw, if anyone has actually walked in the southern portion of the AT, could you drop me a line??)

As much as I have complained about Michigan, the place is definitely beautiful. Imagine that beauty while hanging under a parachute at 3,500 feet in almost perfect silence at sunset.

*sigh*

How could anyone NOT want to jump? An absolutely perfect way to end the weekend.

I feel like I should elaborate, but I feel it would only ruin the beautiful image that carried me through yet another Monday at work. We all have our methods of coping, mine is jumping from planes.

Why I am an Army Nurse

I would like to thank Blackfive for recognizing nurses in his post from 1 July. This article expresses why I am an Army Nurse.

Nurses Week Tribute: Grace Under Fire.”

“Difficult experiences teach us many lessons, but some leave us with only more questions. When we wrestle with ethical dilemmas, we’re rarely rewarded with hard and fast rules that can guide us in the future.

But one image that will stay with us forever is the American flag. We’re used to seeing the flag flying over schools and businesses and even at football games. Now when we see it on the sleeve of a wounded soldier or gently draped over a coffin, it has a deeper meaning. To us, the American flag symbolizes freedom and sacrifice. But most important, it reminds us of hope and of home, where all of our American patients will someday return.”

I am having a difficult night tonight boys. What do you say to officers’ call at the usual place? I’ll bring the gatorade.

For the first time in my career, I wanted to smack the SHIT out of a doctor today.

Okay, there are times when slow torture, stoning, sabotage and just plain evilness have danced in my fantasies in relation to physicians, but this was just an out and out violent impulse. If she would have been within eyesight I probably would have been fired (or jailed).

Blah—and Pissing off Bed Board

I don’t really have much to say today. The week is getting long, and the crap that goes along with health care is wearing on me. However, I AM very happy to say that I earned my keep today.

Two of my patients were lingering in the SICU. The system was DRAGGING. Soooooooo…..I arranged the move from the unit to the floor myself with two quick phone calls: one to the charge nurse on the floor and one to the nurse taking care of the patient in the unit.

“Doesn’t she know how the process works?” Bed Board asked the charge nurse.

*evil mechanical laughter*

If you don’t want me to do your job for you, do it right!

Somedays it is good to be the Queen. (or to at least pretend)

As a group, we are the pot calling the kettle black.

Mediblogopathyposted here about Tobacco free Nurses, a smoking cessation site aimed at nurses and student nurses. The hope? We will be living the life of health that we preach every day.

Hypocritical healthcare has been a pet peeve for a very long time.

What about the respiratory therapists who smoke?

What about the obese nurses?

Anesthesia providers being addicts?

This list could get very long, very fast. I think I am going to go eat a carrot and run 5 miles.
