What journals are on your shelf?

While cleaning out the depths of my office, I decided to sort through my stack of journals. Believe me when I say that I couldn’t believe how many journals I receive.

Here is my list:

Nursing 2005
Critical Care Nursing Quarterly
Orthopaedic Nursing
Nurse Practitioner
American Journal of Critical Care
Emergency Nursing
Disaster Management & Response
Air Medical Journal
Journal of Trauma Nursing

And this doesn’t include the various newsletters from the organizations I am a member of.

I don’t necessarily like polls, but I am very curious to see what journals other nurses/NPs receive.

The nerd in me? Oh yeah, each of the CE articles are marked by a Post-It flag. Maybe someday I will actually get around to reading them…

Robin Hobb was the first author that captured my attention in the “Fantasy” genre. She was also the first author to have me waiting at the store the day the next book was released. It is sad that I am approaching the end of the third trilogy about the world of the Six Duchies. Guess I will have to pull a Patrick and start reading them all over again…from the beginning.

I would like to thank HypnoKitten (Mediblogopathy) and May (About A Nurse) for adding me to their blogrolls. You will find them linked from my page as well. I also added a link to The Nurse Practitioner’s Place which I found on May’s site. Thank you both!!

Patrick and I in Chicago

After an absence, coming back to my blog feels like coming home.

The past few weeks has found me in Chicago, Las Vegas and Los Angeles. I have also turned 30.

We filled Patrick’s short time home from Iraq with tickets upon tickets:

Chicago—Amtrak tickets, U2: Vertigo concert tickets and tickets to Body Worlds.

Las Vegas—Plane tickets, Cirque du Soleil tickets (O, Zumanity, & Ka) and Penn & Teller tickets.

Los Angeles—Plane tickets (and TONS of shopping).

Although I miss him desperately, the little solace I have is in getting back into my routine. Unfortunately, I cannot seem to do much of anything until I have a clean house, and now, yes, a mowed lawn.

My first attempt at cutting the grass in our very contoured yard was an adventure. I have driven Ambulances in down town LA, a HMMWV and a tank at different times during a mock battle while in the Army, but the lawn mower was a bit of a challenge.

Mom proudly mentioned this feat to my father who quickly asked, “And did she mow a pattern into the grass?” (Like the infield of a baseball diamond.) After hearing my mom chuckle a “No,” he asked, “Where is her pride?”

My answer? “Of course I did. It is called Chaos!”

At least the neighbors won’t complain about the grass being too long.

I have lots of comments to discuss about the adventures Patrick and I went on, but for now I would like to just mention how happy I am to be back.

A round of applause for the Thinking Nurse and the beginnings of the new nursing carnival, ‘Nursing Moments.’

I am so happy to see that someone has taken the plunge and introduced nursing as a core topic. I have to express my disappointment that I missed the entry deadline for premier week!

Patronizing Nurses–Perpetuation of the Problem

I thought this post by GruntDoc on Patronizing Nurses was interesting when I first read it. Looking back now on the dialog it has produced makes it an even better read.

I attended a day long regional trauma conference today that was hosted by my institution and thought about this post during the first session.

I am not usually one who gets bent out of shape about politically correct stuff, but imagine my chagrin when the sticky preprinted name tags had physician and PA credentials prominently displayed, but not RN, NP, or EMT credentials.

Yeah, I commented on that one in the customary “course evaluation” handout.

Oh, and the next time a physician refers to the other NP and I as, ‘the girls’ I may strangle someone with my stethoscope.

The ‘Swiss-Cheese Effect’ in health care mistakes: When your patient almost becomes a statistic.

Almost every journal article, news paper article, and student paper discussing mistakes made in health care refers to the Institute of Medicine report, “To Err Is Human: Building a Safer Health System.” The report caused a media frenzy that panicked many patients and health care providers alike. Although the number of deaths caused by medical errors is enough to scare the most experienced nurse, the statistics haven’t always translated into bedside improvements.

What happens when it is your patient on the cusp of becoming part of this number?
