Order writin’ fool

My NP license finally came through from the state. Damn if waiting for all of that paperwork wasn’t a pain in the ass. I didn’t think being about to write orders under my own name would be too big of a deal. It is a HUGE deal!

Spent some time with the NPs up in the NICU today. That is something I will have to write about later. It was a great face to face.

For the first time in a few weeks I finally feel as though I made some progress and did some good. Ironically it was the first day by myself (without the other NP) in a very, VERY long time. I wonder if that was a coincidence.

Am going to a huge formal occasion tomorrow night with my mom. Another thing to write about later.

Spent the evening at a surprise 30th birthday party for a friend from way back. That was good times. I am exhausted. I am not going to spell check this. I am going to bed.

Day off!

How strange to have a day off in the middle of the week. I have to say that I have gone through the day feeling fairly lost. Breakfast with mom this morning was a good change of pace.

Running errands was tedious but necessary. I was able to drop my jewelry off to get fixed, take the dog to get her toe nails clipped, purchase a watering can for my plants, and buy some live coral for my baby salt water aquarium. I also got gas, went to the post office and bought a few groceries.

The afternoon should have been spent cleaning the hot tub, but the cold weather just wasn’t helping that kind of chore! Instead, I was able to completely update the blog to include the random photo entry. All in all I feel like today was well spent.

Off to battle the masses at the hospital again tomorrow. Two more days until the weekend.

Turf to the NP

“Let the NP do it.”

That was what the unit secretary told us the resident said when she called him with a direct admission.

Turfed an admission to the NP…because he was sleeping. At 1:00 pm. I guess I need to do a much better job at educating the residents as to my role. It is definately NOT to be his, or anyone else’s slave…all because he wants to take an afternoon nap.

Sorry, didn’t realize that that comment and track back pop up window font colors were all screwed up. Guess it is time for some house keeping on the ol’ blog on Wednesday (I have a day off!!)

After a bit of a delay, my article on Necrotizing Fasciitis was finally published the January issue of Critical Care Nursing Quarterly (Vol 28, No 1, pg. 80). Why NF? My sister suggested it one afternoon during a phone call that I initiated due to my lack of ability to come up with a paper topic for one of my grad school classes. Damn it is good to have a sister who is a nurse.

SimMan waste of $42,000?

Is SimMan really worth $42,000? We had one of these bad boys in our nursing lab at UPenn and I have to say that I was just not impressed. After an hour of use, the heart sounds, lung sounds and bowel sounds were memorized and the fact that the chest moved was no longer a novelty.

The amount of learning through using SimMan was directly related to the skill of person running the laptop which controlled him. What happened to good ol’ clinicals? I personally don’t Sue’s belief that every school should have one.

Although it feels like most of my time in my new role as an NP has been devoted to reading everything I can about state law in reference to prescriptive authority, collaborative agreements and the like, a clinical focus has emerged.

An old crusty CNS I will refer to as M.M. cornered me during my first week.

“Heidi, (she couldn’t keep my name straight) you need to focus on four things: Pee, Poop, Pain and Skin. Those Ortho guys don’t do any of these things well. You need to be an expert at all of them.”

After spending time both in the Army as a flight medic and now working with the ortho-trauma population, posts like this one about pain control techniques used in the military from blogborygmi really interest me.

Over the past few months, I have acquired a collection of flagged posts from the 40+ blogs I frequent. (Have I mentioned how much I love FeedDemon?). Now that I have passed my boards and have settled into a routine, I have realized that I am far behind in with my intention of commenting on these flagged posts. Hopefully they will come fast and furious and that I will be able to say all that I have to say.

To Blog or Not to Blog–New NP on the Block

For the past days, and weeks actually, I have been attempting to formulate an appropriate method for expressing/discussing my professional progression. This is under the shadow of bloggers being fired from their jobs, and the yet to be seen, backlash of medical/nursing bloggers discussing patient interactions and scenarios.

My desire to discuss my professional niche stems from the fairly unique situation I have found myself in.
